Predators have finalized the signing of a new French defensive back. Thomas Houel joins the team coming from Grizzlys, competing in Division 1 of the French league — the same club where Juwan and Hichem previously played. Ahead of the upcoming season, we sat down with Thomas to talk about his journey, motivations, and expectations.

Background & Football Journey

Can you tell us about your background in American football and how it all started for you in France?

I was fortunate to experience the top level of French football fairly early in my career, first with Centaures de Grenoble and then with Grizzlys Catalans. More recently, I also had the opportunity to play flag football at a very high level by joining Sphinx de Pau, the best program in France and one of the top programs in Europe. With them, I competed in the European Cup and finished as runner-up.

I started playing American football at the age of 16, eight years ago, after discovering the sport through the anime Eyeshield 21. I was hooked immediately.

Why did you choose to play defensive back?

I’ve always had an athletic profile, and I was naturally placed as defensive back because it’s one of the most athletically demanding positions. I also quickly fell in love with the mentality and responsibility that come with playing DB.

What does American football mean to you beyond being a sport?

It’s my passion. I’ve made many sacrifices for this sport, and I truly appreciate everything it represents — the values, the discipline, and the American-style show surrounding the game.

How did your time in French Division 1 help you grow as a player and as a person?

Division 1 helped me grow a lot mentally. There are so many talented and athletic players in France, which forces you to constantly raise your level to remain competitive. I owe a lot to Farid Kachour, head coach of the Grizzlys — he played a major role in shaping the player I am today.

Experience in France

How would you describe the level and intensity of French Division 1?

One of the biggest strengths of Division 1 is the number of all-round athletes. That creates a fast-paced, physical league with a consistently high level of competition.

What did you learn during your time with the Grizzlys that will help you going forward?

I had a professional contract and held a dual role as both a player and an employee of the club. That allowed me to truly understand what it means to be a professional athlete, but also how important the organizational side is — everything that happens behind the scenes.

Is there a season or moment in France that stands out the most to you?

My final season with Grizzlys really stands out. It was full of ups and downs, challenges, and lessons, and I grew a lot from that experience.

Choosing Predators

Why did you decide to pursue an international opportunity at this point in your career?

Playing abroad has always been one of my goals. When my contract with the Grizzlys ended, I felt it was the right time to take that step.

How did the first contact with the Predators happen?

I received a message from the head coach, and we started talking. The feeling was great right away. I’ve always been drawn to Scandinavia, so everything felt very natural.

Did Juwan’s and Hichem’s experiences with the Predators influence your decision?

Not directly. What mattered most to me was my own feeling and the football project presented to me. However, it was definitely reassuring to know that former teammates had positive experiences with the club.

What ultimately convinced you that Predators is the right fit for you?

Above all, the relationship with the coach, my interest in Scandinavia, and a football project that aligns with my ambitions.

Playing Style & Role

How would you describe your playing style as a defensive back?

I’m a versatile DB who can play multiple positions, although cornerback is my preferred spot. I’m most comfortable in man-to-man coverage and I consider myself a true ball player.

What are your main strengths on the field?

My athleticism is definitely one of my biggest strengths. I can physically match up with many players, but I also bring energy, intensity, and strong determination.

What role do you want to have in Predators’ defense?

I want the defense to be able to rely on me and feel confident in the secondary when I’m on the field.

How do you like to contribute to a team, both on and off the field?

I want to contribute through strong performances on the field, but also by being a supportive presence off the field. I enjoy pushing my teammates, sharing experience, and helping build strong team chemistry.

Goals & Expectations

What are your personal goals for the upcoming season?

My goal is to make my first season as an import a success, bring real added value to the team, and of course, finishing the season with a championship would be the ultimate achievement 💍💍

What are the team’s collective goals?

To keep improving throughout the season, build a strong collective identity, and compete together for a title.

What part of your game do you want to improve the most this season?

My impact against the run — being more aggressive and more involved in stopping the ground game.

Finishing Words

What are you most looking forward to in this new adventure with Predators?

Experiencing life in a country I’ve dreamed about since I was young and having the opportunity to win a title.

Do you have a message for Predators fans ahead of the season?

I’m very happy to be joining this family. Get ready — this season is going to be a good one.
